GW Baseball Drops Rain Delayed Series Opener At Xavier, 10-2
May 13, 2011 CINCINNATI, OH- The George Washington baseball team opened their final road Atlantic 10 Conference series of the season but fell to Xavier in a rain delayed four and a half hour game, 10-2 on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. GW (16-34, 6-13 A-10), entering Friday's game as winners in four of their last five, were unable to establish momentum to start the game. Xavier (26-23, 11-8 A-10) took advantage and posted three runs in the bottom of the third off of Colonial start Brian Derner. Derner took the loss after giving up five earned runs in four and one-third innings of work with two walks and two strikeouts. The Musketeers used consecutive RBI singles to open a 3-0 lead. Rain moved into the area in the fourth inning and a delay of two hours commenced. When play resumed in the fourth inning the Colonials could not capitalize on a double by senior Brendon Kelliher. Kelliher entered Friday's game tied with Xavier's Ben Thomas for the Atlantic 10 lead in home runs with 14. The Colonials got on the board in the top of the fifth when juniors Brett Bowers and Jimmy Best led off the inning with consecutive singles. Sophomore Tyler McCarthy extended the inning by reaching on a fielder's choice, during which an error by the pitcher scored Bowers from second and Best advanced to third. Xavier opened up a sizeable advantage with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh inning to take a 10-1 lead. Bowers added a RBI single in the ninth inning to become the only Colonial to record multiple hits on the afternoon. Xavier's Jeff Richard earned the win by pitching seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts.
George Washington and Xavier will continue the series on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm. RHP Tommy Gately will take the ball for GW against Xavier's Tyler Koors. |
