ARLINGTON, VA - Sophomore RHP Derrik Lutz (Grantville, PA / Lower Dauphin) (7-0) scattered two singles and struck out nine in a nine-inning complete game shutout as George Washington University (34-16, 13-6 A-10) defeated Atlantic 10 opponent La Salle University (17-29, 8-11 A-10) 1-0 Friday evening at Barcroft Park.

Catcher Joe Michalski (Ellicott City, MD / Mt. Hebron) produced the game's only run with a fifth inning leadoff home run (9). Michalski went 2-for-3 with a homer and a double in the contest.

A single from leftfielder Matt Dunaway to leadoff the game, a fourth inning infield hit by catcher Rich Prall and two walks accounted for all the offense the Explorers could muster off Lutz.

Only two runners reached second base as Lutz faced just four batters over the minimum.

The shutout was Lutz's third of the year and the complete game was his seventh. With the win, Lutz improved to 7-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.81. He has struck out 80 batters in 64.2 innings pitched this year.

La Salle starter LHP Dan Waters (3-8) was the hard luck loser, yielding four hits and one run in 6.1 innings.

The Colonials conclude their home schedule and three-game series against the Explorers Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.

GW baseball will honor its seven graduating seniors during a ceremony prior to game one and will recognize a number of its former players who will be in attendance prior two game two.
