Baseball Falls in Season Finale at Xavier in 15 Innings

May 17, 2008

Box Score

CINCINNATI, OH - In their final game of the 2008 season, George Washington baseball lost to Xavier, 6-5, in 15 innings, in the finale of their Atlantic 10 Conference series early Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field in Cincinnati, OH. With the win, the Musketeers earned a sweep over GW and improved to 25-29 overall and 19-8 in the A-10. The Colonials ended the 2008 season with a 26-29 overall mark, 11-16 in the league.

Xavier scored a run in the bottom of the 9th inning to force the extra frames. The two teams twice traded a run each, in both the 11th and 14th innings. In the bottom of the 15th, with two on and two outs, Xavier's Jordan Kelley hit a single down the leftfield line that scored Drew Schmidt for the winning run. Schmidt finished the day 2-for-8 with the one run.

The Musketeers built a 2-0 lead after the first six innings, before GW claimed their first lead of the game with three runs in top of the 7th. Junior Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) led-off with a solo home run, his sixth of the season. After a strikeout and a Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) single to left, Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) gave the Colonials a 3-2 lead with his fourth homer of the year. Reeves ended the day 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two walks.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth, when Adam Pasano doubled home the tying-run with one out to force extra innings.

GW took a slim lead in the top of the 11th frame, as senior OF Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) singled to center and then eventually came around to score on a error made by Xavier's catcher. The Musketeers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, trying the game at four on a fielder's choice.

The game stayed 4-4 until the top of the 14th. Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) tripled to right field and then was driven in on a sac-fly off the bat of Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA/The Haverford School). Xavier managed to respond again, with a Sean Farrell solo homer in the bottom of the frame, tying the game yet again, 5-5.

After GW was unable to score in the top of the 15th, Xavier ended the four-hour-and-forty-minute affair with Kelley's single in the bottom of the inning.

GW's Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Xavier's Jordan Conley earned the win.

Freshman Eric Cantrell (Oakton, VA/Oakton) started for the Colonials and scattered seven hits while allowing two runs in eight innings. Gavin Swanson added three hits, with a run scored.
