Derrik Lutz Throws Complete- Game Two-Hit Shutout In GW's 6-0 Win At Duquesne
May 18, 2006
PITTSBURGH, PA - Colonials' RHP Derrik Lutz (6-3) recorded a nine inning complete-game two-hit shutout as George Washington University (21-31, 12-11 A-10) defeated Duquesne University (18-33, 11-14 A-10) 6-0 Thursday afternoon in an important Atlantic 10 Conference game at the Duquesne Baseball Field. Lutz retired the first 13 batters of the game before clipping designated hitter Mike Carroll with a pitch with one out in the fifth inning for the Dukes' first base runner of the game. The junior faced four batters over the minimum in a 98-pitch effort. GW staked Lutz with a two-run lead in the top of the first inning when shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) led off the game with a single to left field and scored on a double from third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains). Left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) then followed with single to left centerfield to knock in Shanley and put the Colonials on top 2-0. Overall, Shanley went 3-for-5 in the game. GW took a 3-0 advantage in the fourth when first baseman Tim Reeves' (Cumming, GA / Forsyth) suicide sacrifice squeeze bunt scored right fielder Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) who broke from third base on the pitch. In the sixth, Parker roped a two-out RBI double over the third base bag that scored catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) and opened GW's lead to 4-0.
The Colonials added two more runs in the eighth when Shupin and Abokhair singled to begin the frame and senior Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) drilled a pinch-hit double to left centerfield to drive in both runners and finish off the Dukes, 6-0. LHP Steve Chisholm (3-8) started for DU and took the loss, allowing all six runs in his 7.0 innings. The start of the game was delayed two hours due to rain.
Both of DU's hits came off the bat of eighth-place hitter Steve Maiolo as the shortstop chopped a base hit down the first base line to lead off the sixth inning and singled up the middle in the eighth. The victory keeps GW alive in its attempt to qualify for the six-team Atlantic 10 Championship. Fordham University began the day one game ahead of the Colonials for the final spot in the conference tournament and was rained out at Charlotte. The Rams and the 49ers are now scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday. Game two of GW's three-game series against Duquesne is set for Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Colonials will send RHP Josh Wilkie (4-4, 2.90 ERA) to the mound. - GW - |
