GW Baseball Comes Up Short At Duquesne, 3-2

May 19, 2006

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, PA - George Washington University (21-32, 12-12 A-10) came up one run short in its attempt to rally from a 3-0 defecit as the Colonials dropped a 3-2 decision to Duquesne University in an Atlantic 10 Conference game with heavy playoff implications at the Duquesne Baseball Field.

GW is still alive in the chase for the sixth and final Atlantic 10 Championship spot but needs to win Saturday's regular season finale and will also need help from other conference teams.

Dukes' starter RHP Adam Haun (4-7) held GW to just three singles and tallied 10 strikeouts, going the distance in the win. Haun kept the Colonials hitless through the game's first four innings, striking out seven in the span including the first three batters of the game.

RHP Josh Wilkie (4-5) was the hard luck loser in a strong performance, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out seven as he also registered a complete game.

DU scored each of its runs on three RBI base hits as centerfielder Eric Morrison doubled home a run in the second inning, catcher Alex Sharick knocked in a run with a single in the fourth and right fielder Joe Berletic gave the Dukes a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning with an RBI base hit.

Morrison went 3-for-3, overall, in the game.

GW got on the board in the top of the sixth when shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) scored on a wild pitch after getting hit by a pitch to begin the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a ground out.

An inning later the Colonials took advantage of a DU mental error and a fielding error when designated hitter Chris Marsicano (Old Tappan, NJ / Bergen Catholic) lined a shot off DU first baseman Aaron Janusey's glove and legged out an infield hit when Haun was late covering first base. Marsicano reached third base with two outs later in the frame and scored on a throwing error that would of have been the third out of the inning, bringing GW to within 3-2.

Marsicano collected two hits in the game and third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) singled in the ninth to account for the Colonials' three hits.

GW will meet the Dukes for the third and final game of the series and both team's last regular season game. Each club is still alive for post season play but has to win on Saturday for a chance to qualify for the conference tournament. Game time is 12:00 p.m.

LHP Dan Pfau (2-5, 4.82 ERA) will take the hill for GW.
