Baseball Shuts Out Fordham to Advance in A-10 Championship

ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior Nathan Woods spun a complete-game shutout while junior Dominic D'Alessandro homered and drove in three runs as the George Washington baseball team stormed into the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 5-0 shutout over third-seeded Fordham on Thursday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.

With the win, GW (31-25) advances to the semifinals to face the winner of Thursday night's game between No. 4 Davidson and No. 5 Richmond on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Woods' complete game was his second this season against Fordham. On Thursday, the Mansfield, Texas, native scattered seven hits and allowed one walk while striking out four. He induced 16 flyouts and six groundouts.

D'Alessandro played a part in all five of GW's runs that crossed the plate on Thursday. He doubled in his first at bat to lead off the second and then scored on a RBI single by Nate Fassnacht that put the Colonials on top, 1-0.

In the fourth, Mark Osis led off with a four-pitch walk and D'Alessandro followed by blasting the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center field for his eighth home run of the season to give GW a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, he walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a hit by Fassnacht and scored on a RBI single by Matt Cosentino. In the seventh, he drove in sophomore Steven Barmakian with a RBI single for GW's final run of the night.

Woods was in control in the later inning. He allowed just three hits over the final five innings of work, including throwing consecutive 1-2-3 frames in the eighth and ninth to clinch the victory.

D'Alessandro finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs, one home run, three RBI and a walk. Barmakian (2 H, 1 R), senior Robbie Metz (2 H, 1 R), Fassnacht (2 H, 1 RBI), and Cosentino (2 H, 1 RBI) all added multi-hit efforts as GW won for the 31st time this season.
