Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UNC Wilmington
WILMINGTON, N.C. (February 17) - Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) singled with two outs in the top of the fifth to rally GW from a 2-1 deficit on its way to a 4-2 win over UNC Wilmington in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Wilmington opened the day with an 8-4 win over the Colonials.
In the opener, junior Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/N. Arlington) gave up a two run home run in the bottom of the first and the Colonials were unable to catch up after that. Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) helped cut the deficit to 2-1 with an RBI double in the top of the second, but it was not enough as the Seahawks scored three runs in the fourth to take control. GW was able to add a pair of runs in the ninth on an RBI ground out by Rouhier and a sacrifice fly by senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail), unfortunetly it was too little too late.
In game two, junior right hander Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha) (1-0) tossed a complete game, seven innings, limiting Wilmington to four hits while striking out five in his Colonials debut. GW took the lead in the second when Rouhier scored on a double play. UNCW rallied with two in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-1 lead before Bassett's heroics in the fifth. GW added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by redshirt junior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) and that is all the talented Baker needed to earn his first win with his new team.
The Colonials and UNC Wilmington will close out the weekend series on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. start. Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy), the 2000 Atlantic 10 Rookie and Pitcher of the Year, will make his first start of the season for GW.
