Baseball Falls Behind Early, Loses to UNC Wilmington

    WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 18, 2001) - Sophomore Jake Mullis scattered six hits and struck out nine Colonials to lead UNC Wilmington past GW, 8-4, in the rubber game of the this three game series.

    The Colonials fell behind 6-0 after two innings as sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) was hit hard in his season debut. Conden lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up the six runs on five hits.

    GW was able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth, when junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) led off with a home run to right. The Colonials then got a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) and an RBI double by junior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland). GW added a run in the ninth on a RBI single by senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville), but by then the game had already been decided.

    The Colonials return to the field on Tuesday, February 20 when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA to face the Dukes of James Madison University at 2:30 p.m.
