GW Athletics, Arlington County Announce Grand Opening oF Barcroft Park
Feb. 25, 2013
WASHINGTON - The George Washington Department of Athletics and Recreation and Arlington County will proudly celebrate the Grand Opening of Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA on Saturday, March 2nd prior to the Colonials game against Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m.
Festivities will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Chairman of the George Washington Board of Trustees and GW Baseball alum W. Russell Ramsey, George Washington University President Steven Knapp, Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero and Chairman of the Arlington County Board J. Walter Tejada
A celebratory reception will follow at noon prior to the Ceremonial First Pitch, which will be thrown simultaneously by Chairman Ramsey, Dr. Knapp, Nero, Tejada and Craig Esherick, Chair of the Arlington Sports Commission.
"Every GW student deserves the commitment from the university to provide the resources and opportunities for them to achieve at the highest levels, on the playing fields and in the classroom," said Chairman Ramsey. "This facility provides our baseball program with a premier facility to call home, and furthers our Department of Athletics and Recreation's process toward achieving the goals that have been established in terms of performance, fan interest and national exposure."
"I am delighted that our partnership with Arlington County has achieved such a remarkable transformation of this ballpark, for the benefit both of our university and of the community," said Dr. Knapp.
The series with Quinnipiac marks the first competition at the fully renovated facility after the Colonials played their home schedule last season through the on-going construction project. The completion of renovations at Barcroft Park marks the next chapter of GW baseball, giving the program one of the top collegiate facilities in the region.
"A large measure of thanks is owed to our Board of Trustees and Arlington County for their role in making our strategic vision become a reality," noted Nero. "Barcroft Park now joins a growing list of facilities at which George Washington student-athletes will have every opportunity to pursue excellence through intercollegiate competition."
"Having played baseball at this university, I can speak firsthand about the incredible strides that have been made from where GW Baseball used to call home to this immaculate facility that ranks among the best in the region and in our conference," said Head Coach Gregg Ritchie. "For all of the ballplayers that have come through GW over the years, Barcroft Park should serve as a nod of thanks for paving the way."
Updated amenities include a new FieldTurf playing surface, expanded grandstand-style seating, covered dugouts, bullpens, batting cages, press box, concession stands, public restrooms, entry plaza and expanded parking.
A public-private partnership with Arlington County, the university has secured rights to the field for the next 20 years and will split maintenance costs with the county. The GW baseball program and Arlington County have established a mutually beneficial relationship over the past two decades.
"This is a great day for baseball in Arlington," noted Tejada. "Through our very successful partnership with GW, Arlington now has its first turf baseball diamond. I want to thank GW baseball for working with us for nearly two decades in what has become a great partnership with our community. We look forward to enjoying many years of great play on this field by both the Colonials and Arlington baseball leagues."
The Colonials began playing at Barcroft Park during the 1993 season and have amassed 302 victories at the facility over 20 seasons.
GW baseball alum Dan Rouhier '01, currently a radio personality on 106.7-FM The Fan, will serve as public address announcer for this milestone game.
For the first time in program history all home games will be streamed live on RaiseHigh.tv, beginning with the home opener on Friday, March 1.
Barcroft Park is located at 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive in Arlington, VA.
