GW Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Cornell
ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team concluded its homestand by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

Games will begin at 12 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The first game of each doubleheader will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning contest. If the first game goes into extra innings on either day, the second game will change to seven innings.

GW won 3-of-4 against Cornell last season at Barcroft Park for the first wins of the Coach Gregg Ritchie era.

GW (2-6) earned its second victory of the 2014 season last weekend against Lafayette as sophomore pitcher Jacob Williams pitched 10.0 shutout innings to lead the Colonials to a 1-0 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. For his efforts, Williams was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, the first GW pitcher to garner the honor since 2010.

Freshman Bobby Campbell leads the Colonials' offense with a .370 batting average and five RBIs through the first eight games of the season. Senior Owen Beightol ranks second with a .355 batting average to go with one double, one home run and three RBIs, while junior Ryan Xepoleas is batting .323 in the leadoff spot with two doubles and four RBIs.

As a team the Colonials have stolen 15 bases in 20 attempts, which ranks first overall in the Atlantic 10.

On the mound, GW's pitching staff boasts an earned-run average of 4.63, which ranks sixth in the A-10. Senior Aaron Weisberg and sophomore Bobby LeWarne pace GW's pitchers with nine strikeouts apiece.

Cornell (2-1) opened the 2014 season by winning 2-of-3 games over Navy last weekend in Annapolis, Md. Matt Hall and JD Whetsel pace the Big Red with five hits and two RBI apiece through the first three games. Cornell's pitching staff yielded just three earned runs to Navy in the opening series.
