George Mason Snaps Baseball's Winning Streak
Washington, D.C. (March 14) - Freshman Bruce Baldwin doubled home junior Adam Shorts with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give George Mason a 5-4 come from behind victory over GW March 14.
George Mason tied the game at four in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run home run by designated hitter Stephen Johnson. Johnsons home run was one of the few mistakes GW starter Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha) made all day. Baker continued his impressive season by giving up four runs on six hits in seven and two thirds innings. Baker struck out six and walked one.
The Colonials looked like they were going to stretch their winning streak to seven early on. In the top of the first, sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) and junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) hit back to back singles to get the rally started. Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Albans) hit a sacrifice fly to score Dokoupil and junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) followed with an RBI double.
Baker gave up a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by George Mason first baseman Brad Santmyer to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Colonials got another run in the fourth when centerfielder Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) bunted for a base hit that scored sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius). GW extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail).
Baker came out to start the eighth and got the leadoff man out. He then walked leftfielder Eddie Howard and Johnson followed with the home run to right. Junior Mike OConnor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Josephs) relieved Baker and finished the eighth.
In the ninth, OConnor got the first two men out before Shorts walked.
