George Mason Snaps Baseball's Winning Streak
Washington, D.C. (March 14) - Freshman Bruce Baldwin doubled home junior Adam Shorts with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give George Mason a 5-4 come from behind victory over GW March 14.
George Mason tied the game at four in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run home run by designated hitter Stephen Johnson. Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Albans) hit a sacrifice fly to score Dokoupil and junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) followed with an RBI double.
Baker gave up a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by George Mason first baseman Brad Santmyer to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Colonials got another run in the fourth when centerfielder Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) bunted for a base hit that scored sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius). GW extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail).
Baker came out to start the eighth and got the leadoff man out. He then walked leftfielder Eddie Howard and Johnson followed with the home run to right. Junior Mike OConnor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Josephs) relieved Baker and finished the eighth.
In the ninth, OConnor got the first two men out before Shorts walked.
