Baseball Takes Series Finale From St. Bonaventure
Washington, D.C. (April 8) - Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) pitched five solid innings and sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) had three RBI's to lead GW past St. Bonaventure 10-2 on April 8 at McGraw-Jennings Field in St. Bonaventure, NY. The Colonials improved to 6-3 in the Atlantic 10 and 19-13 overall.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Colonials exploded for four runs in the second to take the lead for good. Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) got the rally going with a lead off home run to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park), senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) and Wald all had RBI hits in the inning to provide the rest of the runs.
GW added another run in the fourth to make it 5-1 before St. Bonaventure scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2. The Colonials answered again, this time with a three-run fifth to take an 8-2 lead. After Dokoupil scored the first run on a St. Bonaventure error, Wald singled home Bassett and senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail) for his second and third RBI's of the day.
The Colonials added a single run in the sixth and one in the ninth to complete the scoring and the pitching took care of the rest. Conden pitched five innings allowing no earned runs on five hits for his fourth win of the season. Junior Mike O'Connor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Joe's) pitched three innings of shutout ball before senior tri-captain Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) came on to pitch the ninth.
The Colonials return home on Tuesday, April 10, to face the Georgetown Hoyas
at 3:00 p.m. Senior Ron Christie (Lincroft, NJ/ Middletown H.S.) will be the
probable starter for the Colonials. Christie, 3-1 on the season, defeated the
Hoyas on March 20 when GW swept a doubleheader from Georgetown.
