Baseball Belts Hoyas, 12-2
Washington, D.C. (April 10, 2001) - Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) belted two home runs and junior Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/ N. Arlington) pitched six solid innings to lead GW past Georgetown, 12-2, this afternoon, April 10, at Barcroft Park.
With the game tied at 1 in the third, Bassett got the Colonials going when he hit a towering three-run home run to right to give GW a 4-1 lead.
The score remained that way until the sixth when GW exploded for eight runs by way of three home runs. After senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Albans) reached on an error, Bassett hit his second home run of the day to put GW up 6-1. Three batters later, sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) hit his first home run of the season to make it 9-1. The Colonials did not stop there. Rouhier followed singles by sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) and senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville) with a home run of his own to put the Colonials up 12-1.
Worth, who took the loss against Richmond last week, rebounded with one of his best performances of the season. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out three to earn his third win of the season.
The Colonials, who improved to 20-13 on the season, will look for
payback tomorrow as they travel to Richmond to face the Spiders at 3:00
p.m. GW then returns home this weekend for a key three-game series
with Atlantic 10 rival Dayton. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday,
April 14, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The final game of the series will be
played on Sunday, April 15, also at 12:00 p.m.
