Baseball's Derrik Lutz Named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week
April 12, 2004 WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman Derrik Lutz (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week the conference has announced. Lutz earned his first A-10 honor after pitching two saves on Friday, April 10 against Atlantic 10 opponent Saint Joseph's. Lutz doubled his career saves numbers and now leads the Colonials with four. In fact, he has worked his way into the Colonials all-time leaders list in saves where he is tied for 10th. Lutz appeared in three games this past week pitching three and two thirds of an inning without giving up a run. He earned a save in game one against Saint Joseph's after pitching one and one third of an inning and repeated his performance in game two to close out the Hawks. Lutz is the third Colonials rookie to win the A-10's weekly honor. Previous winners include Bill Simpson and Anthony Smith who won the award three times including the last two. In total. GW has won six A-10 awards spanning more weeks than any other Atlantic 10 baseball team.
The Colonials had an eight game losing streak snapped when they blew a 10-0 lead in the final game against Saint Joseph's on Saturday. GW has won 13 of the last 15 games while going 7-2 in conference play. GW plays A-10 rival Richmond this weekend at Barcroft Park.
