Baseball Earns Split With Dayton

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2001) - The Colonials came within one late-inning hit of sweeping conference foe Dayton, but instead earned a split this afternoon at Barcroft Park. After winning game one 7-3, the Colonials dropped the second game 3-2.

The Colonials got off to a quick start in game one, scoring six runs in the first two innings off Dayton starter Michael Rolih. Both Sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) and Junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) hit two-run home runs in the second inning to help the Colonials build a 6-0 lead. From there, pitching and defense took over. The Colonials defense, flawless all day, helped support Junior Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/DeMatha) on the mound. Baker pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Baker ran his season record to 5-2 as the Colonials coasted to a 7-3 victory.

The second game came down to the last out. Defense and sophomore pitcher Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) kept the Colonials in a game that was scoreless through five innings. In the sixth inning, Dayton pitcher Mike Kerins belted a three-run home run over the center field fence to break the scoreless deadlock. The Colonials would not go away easily, mounting a seventh-inning rally that nearly won them the game. Sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD) led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run over the left field fence. Krimmel followed by hammering a double off the right field fence. Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) scored Krimmel two batters later with a double of his own to cut the Flyers lead to 3-2. The Colonials would not plate the tying run, as Bassett was thrown out at third trying to advance on an infield grounder by sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius).

With the split, the Colonials moved their record to 21-14 overall and 7-4 in Atlantic 10 play. The Flyers moved to 17-17 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10.

The Colonials and Flyers will play the finale of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) is scheduled to pitch for the Colonials in the 12:00 p.m. game at Barcroft Park.
