Baseball Hosts Charlotte at Barcroft Park While Men's Rowing and Softball Hit the Road
April 27, 2012
The George Washington baseball team will conclude its 10-game homestand with a crucial Atlantic 10 series against Charlotte beginning Friday at 4 p.m. at Barcroft Park.
GW (17-25, 3-9 A-10) is 4-3 on its current homestand with victories over George Mason, UMBC, UMES and Navy. The Colonials are sporting a .280 team batting average and 2.96 ERA during the stretch.
Senior Jimmy Best is batting .455 and slugging .773 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in the last seven games while sophomore Owen Beightol is hitting at a .417 clip with one double, one home run and three RBIs.
Last time out, the Colonials rallied from a 9-5 deficit to force extra innings and eventually defeat visiting Navy, 10-9, in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon. A RBI double by Best tied the score in the ninth and junior Ryan Hickey completed the comeback with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Charlotte (17-23, 5-9 A-10) leads the all-time series against the Colonials, 14-7, and won two out of three against GW in 2010 in a series played at Barcroft Park.

The George Washington softball team hits the road for the final four games of the regular season, beginning with a doubleheader at Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
GW (19-27, 8-8 A-10) has won 10 of its last 14 games following Wednesday's 7-3 victory over non-conference foe George Mason. Junior Sandi Moynihan went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and her second home run of the season to lead the Colonials at the plate, while senior Heidi Penna, the reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week, turned in six solid innings in the circle to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Senior Lauren Wilson has reached base in all 14 games during GW's recent hot streak, posting a .389 average (14-for-36) and a .585 on-base percentage with four home runs, 16 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. Freshman Victoria Valos and junior Tara Fogarty are also hitting better than .350 with multiple home runs and at least 10 RBIs in that time.
As a team, the Colonials have hit 36 home runs on the year, the most since the 2007 squad belted 38. In addition, GW ranks second in the A-10 with 68 stolen bases.
St. Bonaventure (17-19, 6-8 A-10) is coming off a doubleheader sweep of A-10 rival La Salle last Saturday. Ashley Snider is hitting a team-best .346 and also leads the Bonnies with six home runs and 21 RBIs. Jen Sansano (11-8) paces her team in the circle with a 3.01 ERA and 81 strikeouts.
GW is 4-8 all-time against St. Bonaventure, including a sweep of last season's series. Wilson went 4-for-8 with three RBIs in the two games.
With two weeks to go in the regular season, the A-10 picture is still cloudy. While Massachusetts (13-0) and Fordham (13-1) have pulled ahead of the pack, seven teams are vying for the final four spots in the six-team Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held May 9-12 in St. Louis, Mo., and those six teams are separated by just three and a half games in the standings. At 8-8, GW is currently in fifth place.
The George Washington men's rowing team returns to action on Saturday afternoon with races against Rutgers and Georgetown in Piscataway, N.J.
The Colonials are coming off a successful weekend during which they won a total of seven races including two gold medals in the Varsity 8 and Freshman 8 at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Varsity 8 crew edged Virginia by just three-tenths of a second after a highly competitive race that saw the two boats stroke-for-stroke until the final moments. Racing begins at 1:30 p.m. on the Raritan River. The Colonials will race a Varsity 8, JV 8 and Freshman 8 against both the Hoyas and Scarlet Knights.
