GW Baseball Faces Local Rivals in Midweek Games
Colonials Host George Mason on Tuesday, Visit Navy on Wednesday
April 29, 2013
WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team returns to action with a pair of midweek non-conference games against local rivals beginning Tuesday with its series finale against George Mason at 3 p.m. at Barcroft Park. The Colonials then head to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
GW (16-28) split a doubleheader with James Madison on Saturday before falling to the Dukes in the rubber match on Sunday.
Junior Owen Beightol had his 11-game hit-streak snapped in Sunday's loss. Beightol batted .357 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and nine RBIs during his run, which tied for 14th-longest in the Atlantic 10 this season. Beightol currently has reached base in his last 12 games.
The Colonials will look for the season sweep of George Mason following their 11-9 victory over the Patriots on April 2. The Colonials trailed, 9-7, heading to the top of the ninth but plated four runs in their final at-bat for the come-from-behind win. George Mason leads the all-time series, 58-38.
Senior Justin Albright leads the Colonials' offense in batting average (.288), hits (45), runs (21), doubles (9), steals (16) and on-base percentage (.388).
George Mason enters Tuesday's contest with a 15-31 overall record and 6-18 mark in the Colonial Athletic Conference. The Patriots most recently went 1-2 in a weekend series at William & Mary. Junior infielder Blaise Fernandez has started all 46 games for the Patriots and leads the team at the plate with a .354 batting average, 64 hits, 17 doubles, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored. Junior catcher Tucker Tobin leads the Patriots and ranks fifth in the CAA with eight home runs, in addition to a .330 batting average, 12 doubles and a team-best 36 RBIs.
Navy carries a seven-game win streak into Wednesday's game. The Midshipmen have won 11 of their last 12 contests, most recently sweeping Lehigh in a four-game Patriot League series.
