Tom Shanley Earns Fourth A-10 Rookie of the Week Award

May 5, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman shortstop Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/ Pine Plains) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, for the fourth time the conference announced on Monday, May 5th. Shanley is now tied with Richmond's Ben Zeskind with four A-10 Rookie of the Week honors, having previously received the award on March 11th, February 18th and March 24th. GW has now won the Rookie of the Week Award six out of twelve weeks, the most in the Atlantic 10.

Shanley improved his league leading batting average to .409 with a 9-for-21 (.429) week. The freshman had a hit in each of the Colonials five games this week. He currently has a six game hitting streak and has a hit in 37 of the 43 games that he has played in this season. GW's shortstop started his freshman campaign with a 15-game hitting streak.

Shanley went 3-for-4 against Richmond's ace Tim Stauffer, claiming half of the Colonials hits for the game. He also went 3-for-6 against Bucknell, helping GW complete an 11-game winning streak. This is the second time that the Colonials have had an 11-game winning streak, the first time the baseball team has achieved the feat twice in a single season.

The Colonials have now claimed 11 A-10 honors in 12 weeks, this mark is tied with Richmond for the best in the conference. GW who had six players drafted from last year's squad is clearly building a strong core of young talent having won the A-10 Rookie of the Week on average every other week. Joining Shanley as honorees are outfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA/ Fayette County) and pitcher Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA/ Chattahoochee).

With this week's award, Shanley becomes one of the favorites to become this year's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. The Colonials rollercoaster season remains in the balance as GW finishes the regular season with six conference games. The Colonials must win their series with Temple in order to advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Norwich, CT. GW won last year's A-10 Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time.
