June 9, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University senior shortstop Tom Zebroski was chosen by the Kansas City Royals Wednesday in the 45th round (1,349th pick overall) of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. It marks the second GW player to be drafted this year after junior RHP Eric Cantrell was selected in the 7th round Tuesday, also by Kansas City. "It's just a dream come true," Zebroski said. "Ever since I started playing little league baseball, I wanted to play professional baseball one day, and now that I have this opportunity it's really very exciting. It is also very satisfying considering the countless hours of hard work that have gone into my baseball development. I'm very honored and proud to have been selected by the Royals and I'm looking forward to continuing my baseball career at the next level." Zebroski, who was named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year for Baseball, finished the season with a .429 overall average to lead the Atlantic 10 Conference and also led the Conference with a .479 average in league games. A Louisville Slugger All-America third-team selection, Zebroski also paced the A-10 with a .733 slugging percentage, which included an .838 percentage in conference play. He also led the league with 18 home runs, 103 hits, and 75 runs scored. Zebroski fell just one hit shy of tying the all-time single-season Conference hits record of 104. The Port Washington, NY, native finished his highly-decorated Colonials career as the all-time leader in runs (213) and hits (299) and also finished second all-time in games played (213), at bats (841) and total bases (455). He broke three single-season records in his 2010 campaign, including the previous hits record by 11, with 103 hits on the year. He scored 75 runs and recorded 176 total bases, which broke the previous records of 71 runs and 168 total bases.
Zebroski was named GW's 2010 recipient of the J. Dallas Shirley Senior Male Athlete of the Year award, the Athletic Department's highest individual honor for a Colonials' student-athlete. He also was named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team. GW finished the 2010 season with a record of 26-28 overall, 14-13 (7th) in the A-10. |
