7th Annual Home Run Golf Classic to Benefit GW Baseball Announced
July 1, 2003 WASHINGTON, DC - The 7th Annual George Washington University Baseball's "Home Run" Golf Classic will be held on Friday, July 18, 2003 at Reston National Golf Course, head baseball coach Tom Walter has announced. Event organizers are currently looking for sponsors and golfers alike. Last year's tournament raised over $25,000 for the GW baseball program. The last six tournaments have raised more than $200,00, which has enabled the team to increase its travel budget, upgrade recruiting efforts, and purchase new equipment. This year's fundraising goal for the tournament is $30,000. Thanks in part to the success of the "Home Run" Golf Classic, GW Baseball has made great strides forward in the last few years. In a year in which the squad had 14 first-year players, 7th year Head Coach Tom Walter led the club to a 37-18 record, including an overwhelming 19-3 record at home. The Colonials advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament where they lost to eventual A-10 champion Richmond. Senior RHP Greg Conden became the all-time winningest pitcher in GW history with 35 career wins and was drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Draft by the San Diego Padres. Senior OF Tony Dokoupil finished his career ranked in the GW All-Time Top 10 in seven offensive categories, and was honored as a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. Freshman SS Tom Shanley led the A-10 in batting and ranked 43rd nationally with a .398 average. He was selected as the A-10 Rookie of the Year, and was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Shanley was named a member of the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team.
