WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball rising-senior Brian Derner has been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 30th.

Derner, pitching for the New Bedford Bay Sox, threw seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit in New Bedford's 8-1 victory over Vermont on June 29. Derner fanned five batters while yielding just two walks.

In three starts thus far, Derner has struck out a team-high 17 batters and has surrendered just five earned runs in 16.2 innings for a 2.70 ERA. He totaled 41 strikeouts and one complete game in 63 innings of work for the Colonials in 2012.

Founded in 1993, the NECBL is a 10-team league that plays in all six New England states. It recruits players attending U.S. colleges not only from New England, but all other 44 states as well as and foreign countries. The Bay Sox, who are located in Eastern Massachusetts, are 13-7 on the young season.

A number of GW baseball players are currently playing in NCAA-sanctioned summer leagues around the country. Read about Aaron Weisberg's experiences in the NECBL.
