GW Baseball Announces Dustin Johnson as Assistant Coach
Former Binghamton Assistant Will Coach Colonials' Pitchers in 2015
July 14, 2014
Coach Johnson joins the Colonials after spending the previous three seasons at Binghamton University, most recently helping guide the Bearcats to two consecutive America East Conference championships and NCAA Regional appearances.
"We are very happy to welcome Dustin to the GW baseball family," said head coach Gregg Ritchie. "He comes from an established program that is coming off consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, so he knows exactly what it takes to be a winner. He is going to be a huge asset for us moving forward."
During his time at Binghamton, Coach Johnson helped the Bearcats set program bests in earned run average, walks allowed, walks allowed per game, strikeout-to-walk ratio and opponent batting average.
He also mentored two pitchers who became Major League Baseball Amateur Draft picks, including Mike Augliera, a fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft which is the highest-selected player in program history.
Under his tutelage, he helped a total of six players earn America East All-Conference pitching selections.
In 2012, the Bearcats pitching staff ranked seventh overall in Division I in walks allowed per game and 20th overall in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Prior to his time at Binghamton, Coach Johnson served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator in addition to overseeing the strength and conditioning program at his alma mater of Bloomsburg University.
In 2011, he helped the Huskies produce the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-PSAC East Pitcher selection in Kyle Hunter. During his time at Bloomsburg he also helped the Huskies' pitching to the best marks in ERA, walks and strikeout-to-walk ratio in over nine seasons.
Coach Johnson also has extensive summer league experience and has worked at camps for Under Armor, Headfirst, All-Star Baseball Academy, Bucknell, Rider and Penn State.
A four-year letterwinner, starting pitcher and team captain during his collegiate playing career, Coach Johnson led the Bloomsburg pitching staff in wins, strikeouts, complete games and innings pitched over two seasons from 2006-07.
Coach Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in elementary education from Bloomsburg in 2008 before earning his master's in instructional technology in 2010.
