July 31, 2012
WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball rising senior Brian Derner has garnered weekly honors in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) for the second time this summer after being named the Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Derner threw a six-inning, rain-shortened complete game against the first place Newport Gulls on July 28. He allowed just three base runners while fanning eight batters.
The Alexandria, Va., native is enjoying a strong season for the New Bedford Bay Sox. He ranks third in the league with a 1.91 ERA and has pitched to a 3-1 record while allowing just eight earned runs and 12 walks in 37.2 innings. He currently ranks third in the league with 47 strikeouts.
Derner garnered Pitcher of the Week Honors on July 2 after throwing seven shutout innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts on June 29 against Vermont.
Founded in 1993, the NECBL is a 10-team league that plays in all six New England states. It recruits players attending U.S. colleges not only from New England, but all other 44 states as well as foreign countries. The Bay Sox, who are located in Eastern Massachusetts, are 13-7 on the season.
A number of GW baseball players are currently playing in NCAA-sanctioned summer leagues around the country. Read about Aaron Weisberg's experiences in the NECBL.
