Colonials Baseball Team Captains Named For 2004 Season
Sept. 16, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials will have three captains for the 2004 season head coach Tom Walter has announced. The tri-captains are senior Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield), senior Dennis Gramolini (Wakefield, MA/Reading Memorial) and junior Anthony Raglani (Indiana, PA/Indiana). Fertitta was a captain for last year's Colonials team.
Fertitta played in 52 of GW's games last season playing first base, third base and catcher. He has played in 144 games over the last three years and could make the Colonials all-time list in at bats (474), home runs (18), runs batted in (112), total bases (221) and walks (72). As a junior Fertitta was second at GW with 48 runs batted in. He was also third at GW with 23 walks in 2003.
Gramolini adds experience to the Colonials bullpen. With an impressive all-time 5-1 record, Gramolini's .833 winning percentage is tied with former pitcher Justin Orenduff for second-best ever at GW. The senior appeared in 16 games last year in relief and finished seven of those contests. Last season, he held left-handed hitters to a .250 batting average and held opponents to the same low mark when pitching with two-outs.
Raglani started 54 games in outfield last year, the most of any Colonials player. He was named the NCBWA National Player of the Week as well as the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on March 18, 2003. Raglani is a career .305 hitter playing 110 games in two years. Despite only being a junior, he is within striking distance of the GW all-time Top Ten list in both doubles (32) and runs batted in (77). In 2003, he was first for the Colonials in runs (48), doubles (19), and walks (32). He had 99 total bases on 60 hits while batting .331 in 2003.
The Colonials who went to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2003 for the fourth straight year will begin their 2004 season at Norfolk State on Wednesday, February 11, 2003 at 1:00 pm.
