The Colonials (12-3, 4-1 Atlantic 10), who received 13 points from Omar Williams, played their first game as an unranked team since December 5. Carl Elliott contributed 12 and J.R. Pinnock had 11.
La Salle (5-10, 1-3) trailed 39-34 at halftime and remained competitive throughout most of the second half, trailing 65-59 with 7:02 remaining on a layup by Tabby Cunningham.
But George Washington, which has won 14 of the past 17 meetings against La Salle, responded with a 17-2 run to push its advantage to 82-61 with 2:23 left.
George Washington converted 33 of 61 field goals (54 percent) and 17 of 28 (61 percent) in the second half.
Darnell Harris led the Explorers with 21 points while Jermaine Thomas added 15 and Steven Smith 14.
La Salle was outrebounded 36-27 and fell to 0-10 this season when trailing at halftime.
