WASHINGTON (AP) -- Drew Lavender and Josh Duncan each scored 14 points to lead No. 20 Xavier over George Washington 74-66 on Saturday night.

The Muskeeters, who had a six-game winning streak snapped at Temple on Wednesday, weren't particularly sharp. They shot 45 percent, but the Colonials, who held Saint Louis to a shot-clock record 20 points on Jan. 10, were just 7-for-28 from 3-point range.

C.J. Anderson, who had been held to two points in the Muskeeters' 78-59 loss to Temple, scored a layup to give Xavier a 53-42 lead with 10:55 to play.

George Washington steadily cut into the lead, and when Maureece Rice, who had 22 points, hit a 3-pointer with 1:47 to play, Xavier was up 67-66. Duncan, who had 12 of his 14 points in the second half, hit a layup with 1:09 left for a 69-66 lead.

The Colonials' Damian Hollis committed a key turnover when he was called for walking with 37.5 seconds left, but Lavender, who came into the game shooting 91.5 percent from the free throw line, hit three of four in the final seconds. Lavender, who had missed just four foul shots this season, was 6-for-8 from the line.

The Colonials (5-8, 1-2) had numerous chances to make the game closer, but every time George Washington threatened, Xavier (15-4, 3-1 Atlantic 10) made key baskets. When Cheyenne Moore hit a 3-pointer with 3:39 to play to cut the deficit to 64-60, Lavender hit a layup with 3:18 to play for a 66-60 lead. Wynton Witherspoon hit a 3-pointer with 2:14 to play, and the Muskeeters led 66-63.
