Carl Elliott and Damian Hollis each added 13 points as the Colonials (13-4, 4-1 Atlantic-10) won their third straight overall and their 23rd consecutive home game, the fifth-best mark in the nation as play began Saturday.
Leemire Goldwire had 18 points and Antwon Coleman added a career-high 13 points for the 49ers (8-9, 2-3), who have dropped six of seven road games this season.
The Colonials, who trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, the took the lead for good on a Carl Elliott jump shot with 9:56 left in the game, the start of a key 11-2 run that extended their lead to 62-54.
The 49ers pulled to within 66-64 after a Goldwire 3-pointer but could get no closer.
Charlotte Forward De'Angelo Alexander, who entered the contest as the second leading scorer in the Atlantic-10 at 19.3 points a game, was held without a field goal for the opening 21 minutes and finished with a season-low 6 points.
Hollis scored 11 points in the second half and Rice added 10 for the Colonials, who moved into sole possession of second place in the A-10.
