Feb. 17, 2007
WASHINGTON (AP) - Carl Elliott had the first triple-double in GW history with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as George Washington beat Temple 84-72 on Saturday.
GW's Rob Diggs, who did not start for the first time this season, had 12 of his 14 points in the second half as GW halted a four-game losing streak and won its 300th game in the 32-year history of the Smith Center.
Temple (11-14, 5-7), which had won four of its last five, received a career-high 33 points from Mark Tyndale. His dunk cut the GW lead to 75-70 with 1:05 left, but Elliott hit seven free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.
Temple's Dionte Christmas began the day as the top scorer in the Atlantic 10 with an average of 21.7 points per game. But he missed his first 10 shots, and did not score until he hit a three-pointer with 3:03 left to cut the GW lead to 71-63. He had a season-low five points.
GW coach Hobbs, trying to find a winning combination, did not start Diggs and Dokun Akingbade, both of whom had started the first 23 games. Hermann Opoku, a freshman forward from Austria, made his first career start for the Colonials.
GW took the lead for good at 46-45 with 16:34 left on a layup by Elliott.
Temple's Dustin Salisbery had 20 points, but after the game had to get stitches in one of his hands after his hand hit the rim during the game.
