Men's Basketball Bounced From A-10 Tournament by Dayton, 70-60
March 9, 2010
DAYTON, OH -- In what could be his final college game, George Washington senior Damian Hollis went out with a flourish by leading the 10th-seeded Colonials with a game-high 19 points and six rebounds but it wasn't enough as 7th-seeded Dayton ousted the Colonials from the A-10 Tournament, 70-60, in a first-round game Tuesday at UD Arena. Following a competitive first half where the Colonials shot 48 percent, Dayton held GW scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the second half while building an 11-point lead (44-33) with 17:28 left. GW rallied to tie the game twice with under seven minutes remaining, the last at 55-55 on a Hollis jumper with 5:57 showing. Dayton responded with a 15-2 run to close out the game. The loss dropped the Colonials' record to 16-14. Dayton (20-10) had four players score in double figures led by Marcus Johnson's team-high 16 points. Chris Johnson and Rob Lowery added 11 points each and Paul Williams chipped in with 10 points. The victory allows the Flyers to advance to Atlantic City for a quarterfinal-round matchup with their archrival, 2nd-seeded Xavier, Friday at 6:30 p.m. GW sophomores Tony Taylor and Aaron Ware each added seven points for the Colonials who trailed, 37-33, at the half. Dayton got 11 first-half points from Chris Johnson and 10 from Marcus Johnson. A-10 All-Rookie Team member Lasan Kromah was held to just five points and was plagued by foul trouble. He picked up his fourth foul at the 13:04 mark of the second half. Dayton's largest lead of the game was 13 with less than a minute to play as the Flyers converted 10-of-12 free throws over the final seven minutes, including 6-for-8 by Kurt Huelsman, a 58 percent free throw shooter entering Tuesday's game.
The Colonials outrebounded the Flyers, 31-28, including a 9-7 edge on the offensive end. GW shot 44.9 percent (22-for-49) for the game while the Flyers shot 42.9 percent (18-for-42). UD outscored GW at the free throw line, 26-10. |
