Diggs Paces GW to a 77-62 Season Opening Victory

WASHINGTON (AP) -Rob Diggs scored 21 points and Wynton Witherspoon added 15 points and 11 rebounds as George Washington opened the game on a 15-0 run and rolled to a 77-62 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
The Colonials (1-0) raced out to the early lead and were up by as many as 25 points in the first half on the strength of their pressure defense and long range shooting. They held the Mountaineers scoreless for over eight minutes to start the game while hitting 7-of-11 3-point field goals before halftime. Diggs did his damage inside, hitting on 8-of-10 shots from the field.
The Mountaineers (0-1) used an 8-0 run in the second half to get as close as 64-52. Will Holland scored a game-high 25 points and Chris Vann added 21 points.
It was the season opener for both teams, but the Colonials defense looked to be in midseason form. They harassed the Mountaineers into missing their first eight shots as they raced out to a 39-23 halftime lead. Maureece Rice, the Colonials leading scorer last season, finished with 15 points.
The Colonials, who are gunning for their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, have won 19 straight home openers and are 5-2 overall in season openers under head coach Karl Hobbs. They earned an automatic bid last season by winning the Atlantic 10 conference tournament as the sixth seed and could have to come out of pack again to repeat. The Colonials were picked seventh in the Atlantic 10 preseason media poll.
The Mountaineers, preseason picked to finish fourth in the Northeastern Conference, dropped their ninth straight season opener. They played without starting guard Jeremy Goode and forward Kelly Beidler, both suspended for violating university and team rules.
