WILMINGTON, NC -- Sophomore Aaron Ware scored a game-high 16 points in leading George Washington to its fifth straight season-opening victory with a 76-71 triumph over UNC Wilmington Sunday at UNCW's Trask Coliseum. The game was a rematch of GW's thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament at Greensboro, NC. The Colonials (1-0) are now 7-2 in season-openers under ninth-year coach Karl Hobbs.

A total of 60 personal fouls were called in the game. Senior Damian Hollis picked up his fourth foul at the 16:11 mark of the second half forcing him to bench for much of the game. Wilmington native David Pellom scored 11 points along with fellow freshman Tim Johnson for the Colonials. Tony Taylor (10 points) was the only other Colonial in double figures. GW shot 48.2 percent from the field and didn't hit a three-pointer until Johnson's trey with 6:03 left in the game.

UNC Wilmington (0-1), which was held to just 39.3 percent shooting (22-56), was led by Montez Downey's 15 points on 5-10 shooting and Keith Rendleman's 16-rebound, 11-point double-double.

Hollis picked up his third personal foul less than seven minutes into the game and sat on the bench for the remainder of the first half and most of the second half.

GW travels from Wilmington straight to Boston to face Boston University on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. contest at BU's Agganis Arena. The game will be telecast live on RCN TV and NESN TV and will be broadcast live on 1050 AM and via the Internet: FederalNewsRadio.com and GWsports.com.
