WASHINGTON (AP) - Chris Monroe scored 24 points as George Washington defeated Mount St. Mary's 68-54 Friday night in the first round of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic.
In Saturday's championship game, the Colonials (1-1) will play Bucknell, which defeated Columbia 61-47.
Monroe helped George Washington pull away from a stubborn Mount St. Mary's team that trailed by only five with 13 minutes left. Monroe scored six points in a three-minute span to help the Colonials take a 64-49 lead with 3:53 left.
Pat Atangana scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead the Mountaineers (0-2).
GW guard T.J. Thompson had 11 assists and at times played against his brother Landy, who scored six points for the Mountaineers, a week after Landy Thompson scored 28 in a loss to North Carolina State.
George Washington made just 14 of 28 free throws, a big reason it couldn't
pull away from the Mountaineers sooner. But Mount St. Mary's hurt itself with
20 turnovers, leading to 23 points for the Colonials.
