Alexander Kireev Signs With GW Basketball

Jan. 2, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - Alexander Kireev (Shreveport, LA/Evangel Christian Academy) has signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Karl Hobbs has announced. Originally from Nikolaev, Ukraine, he is the Colonials' fourth early signee.

Kireev (pronounced "Kear-RAY-ef") is a 6-foot-11, 240-pound forward currently averaging 10 points and nine rebounds for Evangel Christian (13-2).

"Alexander will give us a much-needed inside presence," Hobbs said. "Because of his size and skill level, he will be expected to play right away. He's a great rebounder, he can catch-and-shoot, and he can pass very well for a big man."

Kireev is in his third season at Evangel Christian under coach Todd Foster. He is a Street & Smith's Magazine honorable mention All-America selection.

GW's recruiting class for 2003, which includes three other early signees, is ranked No. 22 in the nation and tops in the Atlantic 10 Conference by RivalsHoops.com. The group is tabbed No. 34 by Basketball Times.
