PHILADELPHIA, PA -- George Washington's Damian Hollis has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for men's basketball the league office announced Sunday. It marks Hollis' first A-10 weekly honor of his career.
Hollis averaged 14.5 points and shot better than 83 percent from the field as GW posted a 1-1 record last week. He scored his career high with 14 points in GW's 62-56 loss at Saint Joseph's Wednesday in Philadelphia.
The 6-8 freshman guard from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, followed that with 15 points in GW's 84-72 victory over Temple Saturday with his parents in attendance at Smith Center. (Hollis' father, Essie, had a stellar career at St. Bonaventure University.)
Hollis looked comfortable as he converted 7-8 three-pointers in the two games and 10-of-12 FGs for the week. His selection marks GW's first A-10 Rookie award for men's basketball since Feb. 21, 2004, when Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock won the award.
Hollis' stats for the week: 2 games, 29 points on 10-12 FGs (.833), 7-8 3FGs (.875), 2-4 FTs (.500), 8 rebounds (2 offensive, 6 defensive), 4 TOs and a block in 44 total minutes.
GW (16-8, 7-5 A-10) hosts Richmond Wednesday (6-19, 2-10) at 7:30 p.m. in the Colonials' next-to-last home game at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center this season.
