WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington men's basketball team moved up one spot to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll and jumped two spots to No. 6 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Top 25 Poll released today (Feb. 20). It marks the 16th straight week in the AP Top 25, the longest single-season streak in the program's history. GW's No. 6 AP ranking is its highest ranking since being ranked No. 5 the week of Feb. 15, 1955. GW has spent three other weeks at No. 6 in the AP poll, all during the 1954-55 season (Jan. 4, Jan. 25 and Feb. 8, 1955).
GW was ranked 13 straight weeks during the 1954-55 season including the all-time high of No. 5 for the week of Feb. 15, 1955. GW was ranked for 19 straight weeks in the AP poll beginning in the 1954-55 season and continued through the week of Jan. 10, 1956.
At 22-1, George Washington is off to its best start in the 92-season (99-year) history of the program. Saturday's victory over Richmond extended GW's winning streak to 14 straight games, longest in the nation. GW and No. 1 Duke are the only one-loss teams remaining in Division I.
GW's Feb. 11 victory over Saint Joseph's eclipsed the school's previous record for the fastest start in 1953-54 when GW won 19 of its first 20 games. GW's 12-0 Atlantic 10 Conference record also is its best start in 30 seasons as charter members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The Colonials will next play on Wednesday when they host La Salle (17-7, 9-4 A-10) at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. The GW-La Salle game will not be televised but can be heard on WMET 1160 and WAGE 1200 AM as well as www.GWsports.com. A limited number of General Admission tickets will go on sale Wednesday at the Smith Center box office. Call 202-994-6050 for ticket information.
