GW Extends Karl Hobbs' Contract Through 2011

March 1, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington University Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz announced today that the University has extended the contract of men's basketball head coach Karl Hobbs through June 30, 2011. Terms of the contract have not been disclosed. Hobbs is in his fourth season at GW, which is his first head coaching position, and has an overall career record of 60-51 (.541) including a 36-18 (.667) over the past two seasons.

A former assistant coach for eight seasons at the University of Connecticut, Hobbs was hired at GW on May 7, 2001. Hobbs signed his first GW contract extension in May, 2003, that took him through June 30, 2008.

"Coach Hobbs brings the tenacity, spirit, and team-building skills that help cultivate athletic talent and sportsmanship in GW's men's basketball," said GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg. "He's a proven leader with academic values and an understanding of what it is to be a teacher in a university and I am pleased he will continue to build GW's program."

"We are extremely pleased with the job Karl has done here at George Washington and we are very happy that he will continue as our men's basketball coach," said Kvancz.

"Karl Hobbs has brought respectability and a renewed spirit to the GW men's basketball program," said GW Senior Vice President Robert Chernak. "The University is absolutely delighted that we will continue our partnership with Coach Hobbs for six more years."

GW (18-6, 10-4 A-10) can clinch a share of the regular-season West Division title with a victory over Saint Joseph's (15-10, 12-2) Tuesday at Smith Center. The GW-SJU game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 beginning at 7:00 pm (EST). The Colonials spent six consecutive weeks ranked in the Top 25 of both major polls this season.
