Men's Basketball To Face UMass In A-10 Tournament

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington basketball team (12-15, 5-11), seeded #5 in the West Division, will face the East #4 seed Massachusetts (12-15, 6-10) in the first game of the 26th annual Verizon Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, which begins on Wednesday, March 6 at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia. The Colonials and Minutemen will tip off at 12:05 pm Wednesday. The game will not be televised but will air live on WAGE AM 1200 and on the Internet. The game also will air on tape delay at 7:00 pm on WMET AM 1150.

Xavier and Richmond earned the West division's opening round byes, while Temple and Saint Joseph's took the opening round byes in the East. Xavier enters the Championship as the overall top seed and sports a 14-2 league ledger and 22-5 overall mark. Richmond placed second in the West with an 11-5 record in its first season as a member of the Atlantic 10. The Spiders are 17-12 overall. In the East, Temple garnered the top seed with an 87-84 double overtime win versus Saint Joseph's Sunday. The Owls and Hawks ended the season with 12-4 Atlantic 10 records, but Temple earned the tiebreaker by having beaten Saint Joseph's twice this season. The Owls are 15-13 overall, while the Hawks are 18-10.

The second game of the first opening round doubleheader pits Dayton (18-9, 10-6), the third seed in the West, against Rhode Island (8-19, 4-12), the East's sixth seed. The opening round evening doubleheader begins at 6:05 pm with the fourth seed form the West, La Salle (13-16, 6-10), squaring off with Fordham (8-19, 4-12), the fifth seed from the East. The opening round finishes with St. Bonaventure (16-11, 8-8), the third seed in the East, meeting the West's sixth seed, Duquesne (9-18, 4-12).

Xavier opens quarterfinal round action at 12:05 pm on Thursday, March 7 by facing the winner of the Massachusetts-George Washington game. Then it's Saint Joseph's squaring off with the winner of the Dayton-Rhode Island tilt. The evening session of the quarterfinal round commences at 7:05 pm and sees Temple taking on the La Salle-Fordham winner, while Richmond faces the St. Bonaventure-Duquesne victor in the nightcap.

 

 

Semifinal round play takes place on Friday, March 8, beginning at 7:05 pm. The final round of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship will be played on Saturday, March 9. Tip-off is 6:05 pm.
