Men's Basketball Places Five on A-10 All-Conference Teams; Hobbs Named Coach of the Year

March 6, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University senior Pops Mensah-Bonsu (London, England) and junior Danilo Pinnock (McDonough, GA) each earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team Honors while Karl Hobbs was voted Coach of the Year by his peers, as the league office announced its All-Conference teams and award winners on Monday. Senior Mike Hall (Chicago, IL) and junior Carl Elliott (Brooklyn, NY) were each voted to the Second Team, while sophomore Maureece Rice (Philadelphia, PA) earned Honorable Mention accolades and was voted the A-10's Sixth Man of the Year.

GW was the lone school to have two players each on the first and second teams, as well as have two players earn All-Defensive honors in Hall and Elliott. Hobbs is the first GW coach to be named the league's Coach of the Year.

Hobbs, now in his fifth season, has led GW to a 26-1 record this season and a perfect 16-0 mark in the A-10. The Colonials are just the fourth team in conference history to finish undefeated in league play and are the only remaining team in Division I with just a single loss. GW has set single-season records this season for most wins, best start in school history and longest winning streak, which stands at 18 games.

Pinnock, who was voted the league's Sixth Man of the Year last season as a sophomore, leads GW averaging 14.9 ppg and has a team-high 65 steals. Mensah-Bonsu was a second-team all-league selection a year ago and ranks second on the team with 13.1 ppg and 7.1 rpg. He also had a team-high 37 blocks.

Hall, who also earned second-team All-Conference honors as a junior, is averaging 11.0 ppg and a team-high 7.4 rpg. He also has posted a team-high eight double-doubles. Elliott, meanwhile, leads the Colonials handing out 4.0 assists-per-game to go along with 11.3 ppg and 3.7 rpg, and also has made a team-best 44.3 percent (43-for-97) of his three-point attempts, which led the A-10. Both players were voted to the All-Defensive Team, as Elliott made it for the second straight season.

Rice becomes the second straight Colonial to earn Sixth Man of the Year accolades as Pinnock garnered the honor last season. Rice currently ranks third on the team averaging 12.6 ppg as he has come off the bench in all 27 of GW's games. He also ranks third on the team with 81 assists and 43 steals, and is shooting 39.8 percent (35-for-88) from long range.

The top-seeded George Washington men's basketball team opens quarterfinal round action in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship on Thursday, March 9 at 12:00 p.m. when it faces the winner of the Rhode Island-Temple game at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, OH.
