Friday's First Round Game: Atlantic 10 champion George Washington enters Thursday's NCAA First Round for the first time since 1999 and aiming for its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1994. This marks GW's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament where it has a 3-7 record. The Colonials are coming off a 76-67 victory in the A-10 championship final over top-seed Saint Joseph's Saturday at Cincinnati. GW won the A-10 regular-season West Division championship and the A-10 Tournament.
GW's last appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 1999 when it fell to Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers in the first round at Orlando. Georgia Tech leads the series with GW, 2-0. The teams have never squared off in the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets enter tonight's game as the No. 5 seed with a 19-11 overall record, 8-8 in the ACC. GT was the national runner-up to UConn at last year's Final Four and was this year's runner-up in the ACC Tournament to Duke at Washington's MCI Center. GW is 5-0 in neutral site games this season including victories over Michigan State and Maryland in the BB&T Classic at MCI Center. GW's 22-7 record is its best through 29 games since the Colonials began the 1997-98 season with a 20-6 record.
GW Head Coach Karl Hobbs, 43, is in his fourth season at the helm of the Colonials program. Considered by many as one of the hot, up-and-coming head coaches in the country, the NABC recognized Hobbs' efforts by naming him the 2004 District 4 Coach of the Year last season. GW is his first head coaching position. Prior to coming to GW, Hobbs spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Connecticut which included the 1998-99 national championship season. He is credited with recruiting the likes of Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton and Emeka Okafor among others. He was hired by GW in May, 2001.
