Thursday's First Round Game: No. 11-seeded GW takes on 6th-seeded Vanderbilt in Thursday's first-round game in the East Regional.

• GW lost its only previous meeting with Vanderbilt, 76-74, on Dec. 1, 1990, in Palo Alto, CA.

• GW is coming off its second A-10 Tournament championship in the last three years. The Colonials are on an eight-game winning streak--its longest this season--and have won at least 22 games for the third straight season.

• GW earned an automatic bid by winning the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament Mar. 8-10, in Atlantic City, NJ. The third seed in the A-10 tournament, GW defeated #6 seed Saint Joseph's, 58-48, in last Thursday's quarterfinal round, #7 seed Saint Louis, 60-40, in Friday's semifinal and #4 seed Rhode Island, 78-69, in Saturday's final.

• GW's run through the A-10 Tournament can be credited in large part to a smothering defense that held the three opponents to an average of just 52.3 points on 33.6 percent shooting and forced 62 total turnovers.

• This marks GW's 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament (third under Hobbs) and third straight. GW is 4-6 (.400) in NCAA first-round games.

• GW has won 29 of its last 34 A-10 games and 46 of its last 55 regular-season games.

• Vanderbilt enters today's game having lost two straight (both to Arkansas) after winning 20 of their first 29 games. Vandy has victories over NCAA entries Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and NIT teams Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss.

GW's History in the NCAA Tournament: GW has an all-time record of 4-9 (.308) in the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials enter the 2007 NCAA Tournament as the #11 seed in the East Regional. In the 2006 NCAA Tournament as the #8 seed in the Atlanta Regional, GW came from 19 points down to defeat UNC-Wilmington in a thrilling overtime game at Greensboro, NC. That win set the stage for a second-round clash with the tournament's overall No. 1 seed, Duke. Without its top post player at 100%, the Colonials fell to the Blue Devils thus concluding the winningest season in the school's 92-season history. In the 2005 NCAA Tournament, GW fell to Georgia Tech in the first round at Nashville, TN. Prior to that, GW appeared in the 1999 NCAA Tournament under former coach Tom Penders. That squad fell to Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers in Orlando, FL. Prior to that, #9 seed GW lost to 8th-seeded Oklahoma State in the 1998 NCAA first round at Lexington, KY. GW also made the 1996 NCAAs as the No. 11 seed in the West Region. That year, GW squandered a 17-point lead midway through the second half and lost to 6th-seeded Iowa in the first round at Tempe, AZ. Before that, GW competed in the 1994 NCAAs where it won its first-round game over UAB, 51-46, before falling to 2nd-seeded UConn, in the second round at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Current GW coach Karl Hobbs was an assistant on that UConn team led by Donyell Marshall. GW also made the `54 and `61 NCAA Tournaments.

GW's W-L record in the NCAA Tournament by round:
First Round: 3-6
Second Round: 1-2
Regional Semifinal: 0-1
TOTAL: 4-9 (.308)

Next Game: The winner of Thursday's first round game advances to the second round to play the winner of the #3 Washington St. vs. #14 Oral Roberts game at 5:00 pm (EST) Saturday. The game will be televised on CBS and aired live in the Washington area on on Washington Post Radio 107.7 FM, 1500 AM and on www.GWsports.com.
