March 14, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington men's basketball team has accepted an invitation to host Virginia Commonwealth University in the first round of the 2010 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Center. The game will be televised by HDNet. George Washington enters the CBI with a 16-14 overall record. It marks GW's first postseason appearance since the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Colonials' last game took place on Mar. 9, a 70-60 loss to Dayton in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the University of Dayton Arena. VCU (22-9, 11-7 CAA) last played on Mar. 7, a 73-69 overtime loss to Old Dominion in the semifinal round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The first round of the CBI tournament commences on Tuesday, Mar. 16 and Wednesday, Mar. 17. Quarterfinal round action takes place on Monday, Mar. 22, followed two days later by the semifinals. The Championship Series begins on Monday, Mar. 29. Two other Atlantic 10 Conference teams are in the CBI bracket. Saint Louis hosts Indiana State on Tuesday and Duquesne travels to Princeton on Wednesday. The tournament, now in its third year, is played as a single-elimination format for the first three rounds at campus sites around the country. The championship round is played as a best-of-three format. The two teams competing for the title will play a best-of-three series with the higher seed hosting two games should a third be necessary. Tulsa won the inaugural CBI title over Bradley in 2008 while Oregon State, a 64-57 winner over GW on Nov. 28, won last year's CBI Championship over UTEP. HDNet, which is seen in more than 23 million homes on Dish Network, DirecTV and Verizon FiOS, will serve as the primary television outlet for this year's championship. General admission tickets can be purchased beginning at noon on Monday, March 15th by calling the Smith Center Box Office at (202) 994-6050. Ticket prices are $9 for lower level seating, $6 for upper level seating and $3 for end zone seats.
