WASHINGTON, DC -- Steve Pikiell has resigned his position as associate head coach for men's basketball at The George Washington University to accept the head coaching position at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY. Pikiell was introduced as the new head coach at a Stony Brook news conference on Wednesday.
Pikiell, who was GW coach Karl Hobbs' first staff hire at GW, helped guide the Colonials to a combined four-year record of 64-53 (.547) including a pair of postseason appearances in the 2004 NIT and the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
"It's a great loss for the George Washington basketball program and as great a gain as there is for Stony Brook. Steve is a tireless recruiter with an outstanding basketball mind, a great feel for the game and an understanding of student-athletes. He will do wonderful things as a head coach and bring a host of enthusiasm and excitement to Stony Brook," Hobbs said.
GW (22-8, 11-5 A-10) was the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season West Division champion and A-10 tournament champion. The Colonials lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Albuquerque Regional on March 18 at Nashville.
