Basketball's Carl Elliott Named Team MVP for 2006-07

April 19, 2007

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington senior Carl Elliott (Brooklyn, NY) was named the Colonials' Most Valuable Player at the 2007 Men's Basketball Awards Banquet Thursday at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on the GW campus. Elliott, who has played in a total of 90 GW victories over the past four seasons, is the winningest Colonials player ever. Senior Dokun Akingbade (Riverdale, MD) received the Most Improved Player Award and freshman Damian Hollis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was named the team's Rookie of the Year. The team award winners were determined by the GW coaching staff.

Akingbade also garnered the Rebound Award after averaging a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game. Freshman Travis King (New Haven, CT) won the Academic Achievement Award. Maureece Rice (Philadelphia, PA) won the Offense Award after leading the Colonials in scoring and three-pointers made.

In addition to the Most Valuable Player Award, Elliott also took home four other awards for most assists, highest free throw percentage, the Defense Award and the Virginia Ogilvy Steals Award for most steals on the team. The award is sponsored by and named after the late Virginia Ogilvy, wife of Lester Ogilvy, a long-time GW Basketball supporter. Elliott's 2.6 steals-per-game average led the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranked 12th in the nation. He recorded the first triple-double in GW men's history when he scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished 10 assists against Temple Feb. 17. Elliott finished his college career ranked second on both the GW career assists list (539) and career steals list (281).

Freshman Hermann Opoku (Vienna, Austria) won the Strength & Conditioning Award while senior Regis Koundjia (Bangui, Central African Republic) was the recipient of the Desire Award for the second straight year.

George Washington (23-9, 11-5 A-10) is coming off its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after earning an automatic bid. The No. 3 seed in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament, the Colonials won three straight games and captured the A-10 championship on March 10 in Atlantic City, NJ. GW was a No. 11 seed in the 2007 NCAA Tournament where they fell to No. 6 seed Vanderbilt in the first round on Mar. 15 in Sacramento, CA, in the East Regional.
