T.J. Thompson Named MVP for 2004-05

Elliott, Pinnock Share Defensive Player-of-the-Year Honor

WASHINGTON, DC -- GW senior T.J. Thompson (Germantown, MD/Newport) was named the Colonials' Most Valuable Player at the 2005 Men's Basketball Awards Banquet Thursday on the GW campus. Thompson's 13.6 points per game and 74 three-point field goals led the team. Thompson also received the Free Throw Award from the coaches for the second straight year and was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection.

Sophomores Carl Elliott (Brooklyn, NY/Worcester Academy) and J.R. Pinnock (McDonough, GA/Coastal Christian) were awarded Co-Defense honors. Elliott was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive team in March. Pinnock was the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference Sixth Man of the Year. Elliott was awarded the Virginia Ogilvy Steals Award for most steals on the team as well as the award for most assists. Elliott's 2.6 steals-per-game average ranked 15th in Division I.

Junior Omar Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Celestial Prep) was named the team's Most Improved Player by the coaching staff. His scoring average jumped from 7.7 ppg as a sophomore to 9.5 ppg this season and his free throw percentage improved by 12 points to .777 (108-139). Junior Mike Hall (Chicago, IL/Shepard) garnered the rebound award for the third straight year after averaging a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game.

Junior Pops Mensah-Bonsu (London, England/St. Augustine Prep) shared the co-Desire Award with senior Rock Battistoni (Morris, CT/Salisbury) and freshman Maureece Rice (Philadelphia, PA/Lutheran) was the team's Rookie of the Year.

 

 

Ricky Lucas (Herndon, VA/Herndon) won the Academic Achievement Award while Dokun Akingbade (Riverdale, MD/Blandensburg) took home the Strength & Conditioning Award.

GW (22-8, 11-5 A-10) was the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season West Division champion and A-10 tournament champion. The Colonials lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Albuquerque Regional on March 18 at Nashville.
