A-10 Unveils 2010-11 Men's Basketball Home/Away League Matchups
May 21, 2010
NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has announced the home/away schedule for the 2010-11 men's basketball season. For the second straight season, the GW schedule features home-and-home series with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond with dates and times to come later. Under 10th-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW will play at least four games against league opponents that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament field when they face Richmond (twice), Temple and Xavier. Other postseason A-10 opponents include 2010 NIT champion Dayton and NIT participant Rhode Island, as well as games against College Basketball Invitational (CBI) finalist Saint Louis and CBI participant Duquesne. GW will announce its entire schedule in September after all contracts have been signed. After seeing an increase in the revenue and dramatic rise in attendance at the 2010 Men's Basketball Championship, the format for the 2011 Championship (Mar. 8-13) will remain the same. The A-10 will play a 16-game Conference schedule in 2010-11, which allows teams to face each opponent once and three teams twice. The top 12 teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the 2011 Men's Basketball Championship. The first round games of the Championship will be hosted on the campuses of teams seeded #5, #6, #7, and #8 on Tuesday, Mar. 8, 2011. The top four seeded teams (#1-#4) will again receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, scheduled for Friday, Mar. 11 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Semifinal action will take place on Saturday, Mar. 12, with the Championship game held on Sunday, Mar. 13, and televised nationally at 1:00 p.m. on CBS Sports for the second straight year. Fans can reserve all-session tickets for the 2011 Championship by calling Boardwalk Hall at (609) 348-7021. The Colonials, 16-15 (6-10 A-10) in 2009-10, return four starters in senior C Joseph Katuka, junior guards Tony Taylor and Aaron Ware, and sophomore guard Lasan Kromah. They will be joined by six other returning letterwinners and the 2010 recruiting class.
The schedule format was approved at the recently-concluded A-10 meetings in Williamsburg, VA, which was attended by Atlantic 10 directors of athletics, men's and women's head basketball coaches and conference staff. GW Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz was honored for his service as chair of the league's executive committee for the past two years, while Massachusetts' athletic director John McCutcheon was named chair for 2010-11 and 2011-12.
"I look forward to working with John McCutcheon, our new chair of the executive committee, and thank Jack Kvancz for his outstanding leadership and work over the past two years," said A-10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade.
