WASHINGTON, DC -- Phil Rowe has been hired as an assistant coach for men's basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Karl Hobbs has announced. Rowe replaces former GW associate head coach Steve Pikiell, who left GW last month to take the head coaching position at Stony Brook. Both Hobbs and Rowe worked together as assistant coaches at Boston University from 1990 through 1992 under head coach Bob Brown.
Rowe comes to GW after serving as a head coach at the University of New Hampshire for the past six seasons (1999-00 through 2004-05). Prior to his stint at UNH, Rowe served as the head coach at Keene State College from 1996-99. His three-year combined record at Keene State was 43-38 which included a 41-16 record during his last two seasons (20-7 in 1998-99 and 21-9 in 1997-98). Under Rowe, the Owls won Co-Little East Conference Championship honors in 1998-99.
From 1985-90, Rowe was the head coach at Plymouth State College in Plymouth, NH, where his teams combined for a 74-53 record. He also coached the PSC women's soccer team and guided the Panthers to four straight New England Championships and three NCAA Final Fours from 1986-89.
A native of Exeter, NH, Rowe was named both the District Coach of the Year and the Conference Coach of the Year when he began his coaching career at New England College in Henniker, NH. He is a 1974 graduate of the Plymouth State College where he played both basketball and baseball for four years.
"Phil brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and wisdom to our program," Hobbs said. "He's a great addition to our coaching staff and I'm very excited about him joining us."
GW (22-8, 11-5 A-10) was the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season West Division champion and A-10 tournament champion. The Colonials were eliminated by Georgia Tech in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Albuquerque Regional on March 18 at Nashville.
