Brian Ellerbe Named Assistant Coach for GW Men's Basketball

June 25, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC -- Brian Ellerbe has been hired as an assistant coach for men's basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Karl Hobbs has announced. Ellerbe replaces former GW Assistant Coach Darrell Brooks, who has left GW to take the head coaching position at Bowie State.

Ellerbe comes to GW after spending the past eight years as a basketball consultant for collegiate and youth programs as well as the last four years as vice president for corporate development for Madison Grace Construction Services.

Prior to that, he served as the head coach at the University of Michigan for four seasons (1997-98 through 2000-01) including the first season as interim head coach after replacing Steve Fisher. His combined record at Michigan was 62-60 overall, 26-38 in the Big Ten. Under Ellerbe, the Wolverines won 14 games against nationally ranked teams and earned an automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines defeated Davidson in the first round before falling, 85-82, to UCLA in the second round. Ellerbe also guided Michigan to the 2000 NIT. Prior to his stint at U-M, Ellerbe served as the head coach at Loyola College in Baltimore for three seasons from 1994-95 through 1996-97 where he compiled a combined record of 34-47 (23-19 MAAC). He served stints as an assistant coach at Virginia, South Carolina, George Mason, Bowling Green State and Rutgers.

A native of Capitol Heights, MD, Ellerbe is a 1981 graduate of Bowie High School and a 1985 graduate of Rutgers where he still holds the school's single-game assist record (16). While at Bowie H.S., Ellerbe was the top scorer in the Washington, DC metro area and was a first team All-Met selection by the Washington Post. He played in the 1981 Capital Classic alongside Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing among others.

"Brian brings a wealth of experience to our program as a guy who's been a head coach at the highest level," Hobbs said. "He's had great success, particularly in the areas of recruiting, developing players and game preparation. He will be a welcome addition to our staff."

"I'm ecstatic about the opportunity to work with Coach Hobbs and his staff," Ellerbe said. "GW is a great institution, there's a lot of good history with the men's basketball program and there's no reason why we can't back to the level where we want to be. It's been a fun and exciting experience getting involved with my hometown all over again."
