GW Men's Hoops Renews BB&T Classic Rivalry With Maryland on Dec. 8
Colonials and Terrapins to Meet for 10th Time at 19th Annual Event
July 1, 2013
The two mainstays of the BB&T Classic for nearly two decades, George Washington men's basketball will face Maryland in the 19th annual event at the Verizon Center on Sunday, Dec. 8.
It will mark the teams' 10th meeting in the BB&T Classic, with the Colonials seeking to even the event head-to-head record at 5-5 after dropping a 76-53 decision to the Terrapins in 2008. GW had beaten Maryland in the two prior meetings in 2004 and 2005, including a 101-92 triumph in the 2004 championship with Coach Mike Lonergan on the Terrapins' bench as an assistant to Gary Williams.
The contest will also be the 68th all-time meeting in a series that dates back to GW's inaugural season of 1906-07 during which it defeated Maryland, 41-19, in its first recorded varsity basketball victory.
In its 18th appearance in the BB&T Classic last December, GW got 23 points, nine rebounds and six blocks from Isaiah Armwood to defeat Manhattan, 67-55, and improve to 14-14 all-time at the event.
Maryland, led by third-year head coach Mark Turgeon, is coming off a 25-13 overall mark and an appearance in the Postseason NIT semifinals. The Terrapins are slated to return 11 players from last season's roster, led by leading scorer Dez Wells (13.1 ppg), and add Michigan transfer Evan Smotrycz.
