GW Men's Hoops Hosts Regional Rival UMBC on Dec. 21
Colonials, Coach Lonergan to Face Familiar Local Foe in Retrievers
July 5, 2013
George Washington men's basketball will look to enter the holiday season on a high note when it hosts UMBC at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday, Dec. 21.
GW and UMBC will meet for the eighth time since 1988 and first time since the Colonials took a 4-3 series advantage with a 94-51 rout of the Retrievers at the Smith Center in November 2009. The two teams met for four consecutive seasons between 2006-09 with GW going 3-1 and the home team winning each contest.
It will be GW Head Coach Mike Lonergan's 16th meeting against UMBC after going 11-4 against the Retrievers during six seasons as an America East rival at Vermont.
UMBC went 8-23 overall, but reached the America East semifinals under acting head coach Aki Thomas in 2012-13. Thomas had the acting tag removed at the end of the season and will welcome three starters back to the Retrievers' lineup, led by 2012 Second Team All-America East selection Chase Plummer.
Be sure to check back to GWsports.com each day until the release of season tickets on July 8 as a new men's basketball non-conference event is announced and broken down by Coach Lonergan.
