Watanabe, Taylor Set for NBA Summer League

July 5, 2018

Two former Colonials will take the court for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League action over the next week and a half as Yuta Watanabe suits up for the Brooklyn Nets and Tony Taylor joins the New York Knicks.

Watanabe makes his debut on Friday, July 6 at 5 p.m. ET when the Nets take on the Orlando Magic on NBA TV. Taylor and the Knicks open play vs. the Atlanta Hawks at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 7, on ESPN.

All 30 NBA teams are competing in the Summer League, which is held in Las Vegas, for the first time. The tournament-style format culminates with the championship game on July 17 at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN. Each team will play a minimum of five games, starting with three preliminary contests from July 6-10. The teams will then be seeded in the tournament, which starts on July 11 and concludes with the championship game on July 17.

The 2017-18 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, Watanabe ranks second in school history in blocks (147) and games played (134) and 15th in scoring (1,460). As a senior, he averaged a career-best 16.3 points per game along with 6.1 rebounds.

A 2012 graduate, Taylor ranks fourth all-time in program history in assists (486), 12th in steals (130) and 22nd in points (1,345). He’s played professionally in the NBA G League and overseas since, most recently with Turkish club Banvit during the 2017-18 season.

This marks the third straight year a Colonial has participated in the Summer League. Patricio Garino suited up for the Orlando Magic in 2016 and Tyler Cavanaugh played for the Atlanta Hawks last year. Both would go on to make their NBA debuts in the following seasons.
